For GasTerra DST developed a series of educational programs for secondary schools (havo/vwo), in cooperation with CE Delft. The series Energie voor nu en later (Energy for now and the future) makes energy transition relevant and tangible to students, and fits seamlessly into the finals program of secondary education. Using Energie voor nu en later GasTerra wants to stimulate awareness in young people of changes we are facing in our energy management over the coming years.
Mobile classroom
The program DST developed builds on a previous project that involved a mobile classroom run by GasTerra and the University of Groningen, which travelled to schools for lessons on energy management dilemmas. Energie voor nu en later stretched the exposure to the subject in the classroom, as it is both useable as a sequel to a mobile classroom visit and as a stand-alone program.
Cross medial approach
The teaching materials incorporated in the program are meant for three separate areas of expertise: economy, Dutch/sociocultural studies and Nature, Life & Technology (NLT). Teachers can introduce their lesson with an inspiring film clip and test their students’ basic knowledge with a quiz. After that it is their students’ turn. There are tests to run and measure results, subjects to debate, information to process and weigh, opinions to be formed and results to be presented.
The flexible composition of the program represents the cross medial approach to problem solving also applied in practice by GasTerra when working on our future energy management. Energie voor nu en later was sent to teachers for free by request and was supported by press coverage and educational trade fairs.
